Just came back from Buenos Aires and I have to say – eating and drinking is better than ever!  Here are a couple of new restaurants….

1.  Las Cabras – new to the Palermo Hollywood scene – dining at Las Cabras is EVEN better than Las Cholas..  Their food is better, cheaper – but be prepared for a long wait, however  it is definitely well worth it.  And yes, they do have a Gran Bife de Las Cabras.  Yum!

2.  647 Dinner Club – in San Telmo has some of the best food I’ve had in a while in Buenos Aires – well besides steak.  Super swanky and beautifully decorated – you must try this restaurant.

3.  Gran Bar Danzon – not new.  I can’t believe I forgot this gem.  One of my favorite restaurants in Buenos Aires, we spent a wonderful evening sipping on wine and having picadas and sushi in the lounge area.

A Bit About Alpacas…

Alpacas are a member of the South American Camelids having similar resemblance to a Llama. They are mostly raised in highlands of Peru, Bolivia and Chile.  There is a growing number of Alpacas raised in the United States They are highly valuable for their luxurious, lightweight fibers which is often compared to Cashmere.  It also has the ability to keep moisture away from the skin and is durable and highly resistant to staining.  Its fibers are used to make textiles for garments, home products and more.

Hearst Castle – A Must See

Monday, August 10th, 2009

While on vacation in Paso Robles, we made a visit to Hearst Castle, home of William Randolph Hearst in San Simeon. I  highly recommend visiting the castle.  Julia Morgan, the architect did a fantastic job on this spare no expense project – the architecture is simply amazing.  From the 24k gold tiles in the indoor pool area, imported Italian marble statues and antique architectural artifacts that are probably older than any of us – Hearst Castle is definitely an architectural wonder. There are four types of tours available and do make sure to reserve tickets in advance at http://www.hearstcastle.com/.

Hudson, New York – Best places to shop, eat and drink….

Monday, July 27th, 2009

de Marchin in Hudson, NY

Many of my weekends are spent up near Hudson, New York.  I first started going to Hudson about 10 years ago on shopping trips to buy antiques and furnishings for clients.  Here’s a list of my favorite shops in Hudson:

1.  de Marchin/côté famille:  This is the go to shop for great clothes for men, women and kids.  They carry wonderful kid’s clothing and toys (plan toys are my favorite!) and often I find things that I have not seen in NYC.  When I was there last weekend I was coveting a great jacket made from old military jackets by a German Designer.

2.  Birgit Antiques:  Sourcing many of her items from Scandanavia and Sweden this is a wonderful little shop with great pieces of furniture.  On recent visits, Birgit had great industrial tables for dining and wonderful folding chairs – great when you need additional seating.

3.  Le Gamin:  Wonderful french cafe/restaurant.   Delicious salads and sandwiches and the coffee is excellent.  Sit at a table on the sidewalk and spend the afternoon people watching.

4.  Baba Louie’s:  We absolutely love this restaurants.  The best thing crust pizza and salads north of the city.  This is our usual pit stop on our way up for dinner.  (Also in Great Barrington)

5.  Hedstrom and Judd:  Great shop for wonderful garden accessories, planters, swedish furniture and accessories. They also have a wonderful like of botanical, bird and speciman prints. You can find Cheeky Living’s Alpaca throws at Hedstom and Judd!

Buenos Aires – Best Restaurants

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

Las Cholas - Photo taken from Guia Oleo.

Las Cholas - Photo taken from Guia Oleo.

Here is a list of restaurants that I always visit whenever I return to Buenos Aires.  (Not in any particular order)  Portenos tend to eat very late – usually they do not arrive until 11 pm, often dining until 11 am.  At some of these restaurants, be prepared to wait…..

Its very hard to find a bad restaurant in Buenos Aires – although I would generally stay away from Sushi. No matter what any Argentine tells you – their sushi is not the same as what we have in NY. Generally, seafood is not as good and clean as elsewhere, unless you’re in one of the more upscale restaurants. Empanadas, sandwich migas, alfajores (Havana has the best) can be found in cafes, bakeries (panaderias, confiterias).

Casa Cruz If you want a real night on the town, go here.  Expensive but top notch.  Call ahead for a reservation.  Uriarte 1658.  (4833-1112)

Green Bamboo – Great kitschy bar, fantastic drinks and decent asian fusion food (mostly Vietnamese) which is hard to find in BA.  Costa Rica 5802.  (4775-7050)

Las Cholas – very reasonable parilla – all the young argentines go here. If you’re going – ask for the Gran Bife Las Cholas – the mother of all steak, potato, egg, proveleta dishes. Cheap and good. They don’t take reservations so I generally go around 9:30pm to void having to wait.  They do not take reservations.  Arce 306.

Las Cabanas Las Lilas – great steak/food, but it’s about 2x as expensive as other almost-as-good places. If you’re going to a business dinner and need to impress an foreigner, etc. you go here. Av. Alicia Moreau de Justo 516 (4313-1336)

·La Cabrera and La Cabrera Norte – The # 1 parrilla in all of Buenos Aires. It’s a bit touristy and more expensive than other parillas but still the best and worth it. I don’t eat any more beef when I am in NY because no place compares to La Cabrera. They don’t take reservations – so go early, there is always a wait but well worth it.  Cabrera 5099.  (4831-7002)

·Sirop Folie – In Recoleta – best brunch. Be sure to go with lots of time on your ends, you will leave stuffed.  Dinner is also really good here.   Vicente Lopez 1661 Local 12.  (4813-5900)

·CLUNY – One my favorite restaurants in Buenos Aires – I make sure to go everytime I am in town. Great 3 course lunch specials. Last time I was there, I had the grilled salmon and it had just arrived from Mar del Plata moments before it was grilled and on my plate. The pate is also to die for.  El Salvador 4618 (4831-7176)

·Bar 6 – Excellent place for lunch or dinner. Hip, inexpensive good food. Free Wifi.  Armenia 1676 (4833.6807)

·Mark’s Deli – Great place for lunch – great salads, sandwiches and excellent lemonade. Free Wifi. Great place to work, read the paper.  El Salvador 4701.

·Burzako – Wonderful food from the Basque region in Spain.  Located in San Telmo.  Mexico 345.  (4334-0721)

·Petanque – located in San Telmo, this wonderful french restaurant has some of the best steak tartare I have ever had.  Reservations Recommended.  Defensa 596.  (4342-7930)

·Nectarine – In Recoleta, this restaurants romantic setting is a must for a special occasion.  Food and wine are top notch.  Vincente Lopez 1661.  (4813 6993)

Ice Cream:

Persicco is the best. Well, my favorite ice cream place is actually Venezia on Godoy Cruz and Beruti but it is not a chain. Favorite Flavors: Chocolate Amargo (Dark Chocolate), Durazno (Peach), Dulce de Leche & Sabayon.

Buenos Aires – Top 5 Shops for Ladies

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Cora Groppo, Palermo Viejo

Anyone who has been to Buenos Aires knows that the shopping is fantastic and fabulous.  Since I’m lucky enough to make it down South a couple of times a year, I find myself buying most of my Argentine fashions at the following shops:

1.  Cora Groppo (El Salvador 4696 corner of Armenia, Palermo Viejo.  www.coragroppo.com)  Cora Groppo’s wonderful draping and attention to detail gets my vote as the #1 shop for ladies fashions in Buenos Aires.  Her clothes are well made and I still can’t believe that the last two pairs of pants I bought here are so comfortable.  Check it out, you won’t be disappointed!

2.  Paula Cahen D’anvers ( Honduras 4888 between Armenia and Gurruchaga, Palermo Viejo, Paseo Alcorta, Patio Bullrich, Galeria Pacifico.  www.paulacahendanvers.com.ar)  On my last visit here, I couldn’t resist the wonderful floral shirts and the suede chukka boots as well as the wonderful wool sweaters in wonderful solid colors.

3.  Pablo Ramirez (Peru 587, San Telmo.  www.pabloramirez.com.ar)  Wonderful shop for couture fashions in black and white.   If they don’t have something that fits you like a glove they will make alterations.  On one visit, I met an actress and two models who were being fitted for fashion shows.

4.  Jazmin Chebar (El Salvador 4702 and Gurruchaga, Paseo Alcorta, Patio Bullrich, Galeria Pacifico.  www.jazminchebar.com.ar)  Jeans here are the best. I buy a couple whenever I’m down here – the fabric is great and the fit is fantastic.  There are also wonderful cottons, sweaters, coats in beautiful colors.

5.  Maria Cher (El Salvador 4724 between Armenia and Gurruchaga. Paseo Alcorta, Patio Bullrich, Galeria Pacifico. www.maria-cher.com.ar)  Wonderful fashions including beautiful silk prints, metallic fabrics and wonderful cotton tops.  They also have great shoes and oversize bags.

Midwest Airlines – All Business Class

Thursday, March 2nd, 2006

Midwest AirlinesWe’re not making any accusations, but JetBlue may have been paying attention to a certain all-leather-seat airline when it was putting its schtick together. Midwest Airlines, which runs routes to and through the midwestern states, has been doing all business class for years. Priced somewhere between traditional business class and coach, Midwest serves luxuries like lobster and filet mignon on its flights. All business class means wider seats, not just leather-clad coach seats, and a level of service that reminds you of the days when over half the industry wasn’t bankrupt. (more…)

Blancaneaux Lodge

Friday, February 24th, 2006

Blancaneaux LodgeIf you’re ready to head to warmer climes for much needed thawing, consider Francis Ford Coppola’s Blancaneaux Lodge in Belize. Set in the Pine Mountain Reserve two hours from Belize City, Blancaneaux is a luxurious jungle retreat from crowded beaches and tourist traps.

During your stay, you will occupy your own private cabana or villa perched on a scenic hillside overlooking the flowing Privassion River. A central lodge features a gorgeous wooden bar area and an indoor/outdoor restaurant that serves a variety of dishes all prepared with superfresh ingredients harvested on-site. (more…)
